In 1991, APB made its debut in New Zealand through a 50-50 joint venture with Brierley Investments Ltd in DB Group Ltd, later named DB Breweries Ltd (DB). Over time, APB increased its equity participation in the company and in 2004, DB became a wholly-owned subsidiary of APB.
DB is one of the two largest brewers in New Zealand today. Best known for its superior beers, DB offers Tiger, Heineken, Amstel Bier, Amstel Premium, Budejovicky, Budvar, DB Bitter, DB Draught, Double Brown, Erdinger, Export Dry, Export Gold, FLAME, Monteith’s, Murphy’s, Sol and Tui.
Apart from beer brewing and marketing, DB Breweries also offers contract packaging services at three of its four breweries, namely Waitemata, Tui and Mainland. DB also brings Tiger beer to neighbouring Australia through its subsidiary, Drinkworks Limited. Today, over 2,500 outlets retail Tiger in Australia, primarily in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
Located in various parts of New Zealand, each of DB's four breweries houses its special brews and has its own unique history. The four breweries include:
MONTEITH'S BREWERY - GREYMOUTH
From humble origins in 1868, the Monteith's family-owned Phoenix Brewery became the West Coast's most popular brewery for its strong tasting, full-bodied ale. The Phoenix Brewery later merged with a group of small breweries to form Westland Brewing Company, predecessor to today's Monteith's Brewing Company.
WAITEMATA BREWERY - OTAHUHU, AUCKLAND
The original Waitemata Brewery opened during a time of international recession and stiff competition. Despite this, the company thrived, thanks to the winning partnership of original brewery owner William Joseph Coutts and liquor merchant and distributor Henry (later Sir Henry) Kelliher. Coutts' son Morton was known for his brewing innovations, in particular the invention of Continuous Fermentation which was developed in 1953 while Morton was head brewer at DB. Moving with the times in terms of brewing technology, the brewery completed a NZ$60 million redevelopment in 2002.
TUI BREWERY - MANGATAINOKA
An entrepreneur named Henry Wagstaff established the Tui Brewery at Mangatainoka in 1889. His dream was to supply "export quality brews to beer drinkers around the colony" and his ales quickly earned a reputation for excellence. In 1903, Henry Cowan, the eldest son of a pioneering family, bought the brewery and renamed it North Island Brewery Company Ltd. The brewery became Tui Brewery in 1923 and was taken over by DB Breweries in 1969.
MAINLAND BREWERY - TIMARU
One of the most efficient brewers of premium quality lagers and beers in the world, the Mainland Brewery was designed to carry on traditions set down by its early brewmasters. Fitted out with state-of-the-art technology, the brewery has set numerous records for production efficiency and quality standards. DB beers from the Mainland Brewery are distributed throughout the South Island from Nelson to Bluff.
